What We Are Here For

Last week, as part of an art project, a Saskatoon man took people’s pictures with a Polaroid camera and then had them write a “life goal” on their photo. The results were interesting. Some stated that they wanted to travel the world. Several people wanted to write a book. One gentleman wanted to “Run with the bulls” (maybe they should have had a “before” and an “after” picture of him). Maybe the nicest picture was of an older couple, sitting with their arms around each other. Regarding their life goal, one of them had simply written on their photo, “Already accomplished”. So that got me thinking: What would I write? How about you? What would you write on your photo? With your answer in mind, think about this: “Our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Saviour from there, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Philippians 3:20). Does that change your answer in any way? If you are like me, it probably did. You see, my first reaction to any “life goal” sort of question is t

Seeing God

“See, the Sovereign Lord comes with power, He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart. “Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales… Who has understood the mind of the Lord, or instructed him as his counsellor? He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth… He stretches out the heavens like a canopy and spreads them out like a tent to live in. Lift your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls them each by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing. “Why do you say…’My way is hidd

Potentially Great

Samuel had their attention. In fact, the Bible says that the people of Bethlehem “trembled” when they came out to meet him. After all, it is not every day that God’s most powerful prophet just wanders into town. Previously, God had said to Samuel, “I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king”. When Samuel saw the oldest son, Eliab, he thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here”, but God said, “Do not consider his appearance of his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” Abinadab was the next in line, but Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either”. This pattern continued with the next son, Shammah, and every other boy until all seven had unsuccessfully passed before Samuel. Samuel then asked, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is the youngest”, Jesse replied, “but he is tending the sheep.” Samuel sai
