The Best

Genesis chapter one tells us that man was created in the image of God (verse 26) and that he was created to be in relationship with God. Unfortunately, sin entered the picture and that damaged not only man’s relationship with God (Genesis 3), but also man’s relationship with his fellow man (Genesis 4). As a result, though we should be worshipping God and serving one another, we end up serving ourselves and worshipping anything but God. When that happens, we have trouble, as Psalm 115 points out.

“Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness. Why do the nations say, ‘Where is their God?’ Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him. But their idols are silver and gold, made by the hands of men. They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but they cannot see; they have ears, but cannot hear, noses, but they cannot smell; they have hands, but cannot feel, feet, but they cannot walk; nor can they utter a sound with their throats. Those who make them will be like them and so will all who trust in them” (Verses 1-8)

Note the last line: We will become like the thing we worship. In other words, our life will be shaped by whatever we value the most.

We are created to live this life with God in the centre, as the most important thing, so that we can learn from him and be shaped by him for eternity. The principle still stands that “Those who live with Christ now, will live with him in eternity”.

So it is worth thinking about, “What is the most important – the best – thing in your life?”

As popular speaker Louis Giglio notes, “If you are not becoming like God then maybe you are not worshipping the right thing”.

“May you be blessed by the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth… Praise the LORD” (Psalm 115:15 and 18)

New Article: Navigating the New Year

As we begin another new year, I cannot help but think of Joshua.   Moses had been leading God’s people to the promised land.   However, just before they arrived, Moses died, and Joshua was put in charge.   Faced with the uncertainty of what was coming, God gave him the following advice.                “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be stron...

New Article: We need a Better Scorecard

“Is that a Sun Ice?”                “Excuse me,” I said.                My friend pointed to my new ski jacket and asked again, “Is that a Sun Ice?”                It was 1991 and Sun Ice was the big name in ski wear at the time.   “No” I replied, “I can’t afford one of those”.                “Oh” he said as he lost interest and then just walked away.                I had not seen this friend in more than a year and, sadly, his first ...
