Consider This: The Biggest Threat to the Church

Over the years, I have heard people say that the biggest threat to the church these days is a specific preacher, a government policy, the culture around us, watered-down Christian teaching, and a thousand other things. While some of those are legitimate concerns, I do not think any of them are the biggest threat. Here is my nomination for that title.

“For this very reason [because God has given us the gift of salvation], make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 1:5-8).

To be clear: We are not saved because we are good, smart, or right. We are saved by God’s grace alone. Ephesians 2:8-9 says that we have nothing to boast about except God’s mercy. However, that does not mean that there is nothing for us to do.

In the passage quoted above, we are to “make every effort” to add certain things to our faith. When that happens, and those qualities increase, they will “keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ”. That, I think, is the biggest threat to the church!

The biggest threat is not from the outside, but the inside. The biggest threat is that those who have been given the best gift do nothing with it. They neglect it. They become spectators in their faith rather than participants. The church becomes ineffective, not because others are holding us back or restricting us, but because we have put ourselves in a position where we are unproductive.

“Make every effort” does not mean “earn your salvation”. Rather, it means, “Live a life worthy of the calling you have received” (Ephesians 4:1).

Focus on what really matters. Put some effort into your faith. Allow the Spirit to mature you.

If we do not take that seriously, the biggest threat to the church is us.

Consider This: What is so Great About Grace?

If you were to drive by our house, you would see that Sara loves plants.  Our yard is full of flowers, and Sara lovingly tends every one of them. Which is why I was so afraid when she left town and put me in charge of keeping things alive. She must have been a little concerned, too, because she sent me two videos with specific instructions on how to water, when to water, and what to do.  Honestly, those first two videos helped, but the third one she sent was the one I liked most.  In that one, she said, “Please do your best. I want the yard to look good for the family reunion in two weeks.  However, if something dies, we will dig it out and pretend that it never existed!” That is what grace looks like!  Try your best, do what you can, but if it goes wrong, it will be ok. Sometimes we talk as though grace and effort are opposites.  That is not true.  They are partners. In one place, scripture asks, “What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone c...

New Article: Thanksgiving in Real Time

Thanksgiving weekend means that many of us will spend time together with family and friends, eat a lot of food and think about what we are thankful for in our lives.   Unfortunately, after that, most will go back to their normal routines and leave thankfulness behind.                   What would happen if thanksgiving were part of our everyday life, rather than something we focused on a few times per year?   Where would we even start?                 According to Philippians 1:18-26, the apostle Paul remained joyful and thankful, even while imprisoned for his faith, by holding on to three important practic...

Process Produces Progress (1 Peter)

Dreams are good. Plans and expectations are fine. However, only by focusing on the process do we find progress.   1 Peter 1:13 tells us what to do to get to where we want to go (point 3 is my favourite!)   https://youtu.be/qyGwN_OOmCQ
